Medicine Hat, Alberta (December 6, 2012) – Grant writing paid off for five local organizations Thursday as the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta distributed $37,449 in charitable community grants.

Dozens of organizations applied for grants from the Smart & Caring Community Fund in September, and after close scrutiny by numerous local volunteers and several committee and board meetings the Community Foundation announced grant recipients at its annual Chair’s Reception.

“Although we had many worthwhile applications for assistance, these five organizations had programs that resonated with our grants committee,” said executive director Mike Christie. “All of the community grant funds will be to improve the quality of life of people in Southeastern Alberta.”

The largest grant of $10,000 will go to Kidsport in Medicine Hat.

“Kidsport assists local youth to take part in a wide range of sports and physical activities, where for some kids, the cost of participation is an insurmountable barrier”, said Christie. “Every year literally hundreds of youth are helped by this organization; which is important because as a society we are seeing increased levels of inactivity and obesity in all ages”.

Other grant recipients include Alberta Easter Seals Society, Canadian Mental Health Association, Brooks Public Library and the Village of Foremost.

The Community Foundation also announced a further $24,860 in designated grants to donor selected charities.

The Board of Directors of the Community Foundation also approved a matching $20,000 grant for Brooks Lakeside Relief. A lot of people are still feeling the effects of the closure of the Lakeside packing plant in Brooks and this grant will be used to help those most deeply Affected, particularly in regard to accommodation, utility and medical costs. “We are looking for public support and so while half has been awarded immediately the other half will be made it is matched by public donations”, said Christie.

Today’s fall grants announcement brings the Community Foundation’s all-time grant giving tally to 935 grants, totaling in excess of $3.2Milion.

“The Community Foundation exists to give back to the community,” said board chair Gerry Labas. “Whether it is through grant making, endowment building, or community leadership, we are constantly striving to make a positive influence on Southeastern Alberta. To be a part of an organization that has given 935 grants to the community over a 20 year period is a remarkable thing.”

Grants are made possible by donations from local community minded people. The gifts are then invested and the grant disbursements made from the interest earned on the donation. The initial donation is never used but is endowed in perpetuity and continues to give back to the community forever.

The next grant application process will begin in February 2013, with a deadline of March 15, 2013. Applications forms can be found online at www.cfsea.ca.

A complete list of grant recipients is attached. For more information, please contactMike Christieat (403) 527-9038.

Medicine Hat Public Library – Honor Currie Room
November 27th (Tuesday)
Noon – 1pm (bring your own lunch)
Coffee will be provided

We are bringing various members of the community together to address the topic of dumping or donating. This topic has been covered in the past and we want to have a follow up to see where we are now based on the recent information presented by Vital Signs 2012. We will be inviting Solid waste MGT, REDI, CMHA, Social Development, elected officials, and more. The facilitated discussion will discuss the impact of donated items that are unusable and what we can do to alleviate or even rectify this problem. Our aim to is get people talking and see what we come up with…
