Jane and Sandy (John) MacKay moved from Saskatoon in 1969 with their two sons, Bruce and Doug, so Sandy could begin his ophthalmology practice in Medicine Hat. Jane was the practice’s business manager and accountant, and they made a great team. Jane and Sandy have been married 58 years, and are still going strong.
Jane and Sandy MacKay have been long-time supporters of the Community Foundation, getting involved shortly after it was founded. Persuaded by Garth Vallely, Jane served as a Board member from 1995 – 2001.
“The basic concept of a Community Foundation to not use the principal, but just the income from the investment was very appealing to me, and Sandy’s involvement with Rotary reinforced this idea.” – Jane MacKay
In the early days, the Board met at the Chamber of Commerce. Pritchard and Company graciously provided a small office, which, with modifications, is still the same office CFSEA uses to this day. When Jane was initially involved with the Foundation, she dedicated many hours on her typewriter to inventing policies and procedures to create their first Granting system.
Jane and Sandy are still actively involved in their community. Sandy has been a Rotarian since 1977 when he joined the Rotary Club of Medicine Hat. He is also an avid gardener, among other professional commitments. Jane also enjoys giving back to the community through volunteering. She has been involved the YMCA Board, the Medicine Hat College Board, and recently supporting Medalta through their Artists in Residence Program. Jane has developed a love of ceramics, and even has a small home studio.
“Medicine Hat has been good to us and our family and has much to offer. The current Foundation allows us to reinvest in projects and activities that benefit all Southeast Alberta. May the next 30 years be as prosperous!” – Jane and Sandy MacKay
The couple has two funds with the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta. The MacKay Family Fund – Smart and Caring distributes each year to support the community’s greatest needs and The MacKay Family Fund – Operating which contributes to the operations of the CFSEA. The Community Foundation is thankful to have long-standing supporters who see the vision behind the Foundation and desire to support the community now and long into the future.
