The 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games brought athletes, families, volunteers, and supporters together in a celebration of sport, inclusion, determination, and community pride. But the impact of the Games did not end with the closing ceremonies.

The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Legacy Fund was created to turn that once-in-a-generation moment into lasting community benefit. This permanent endowment was established to support access to sport, recreation, and active living across Southeast Alberta by helping remove barriers, expand inclusive opportunities, and strengthen healthy, connected communities for years to come.

Why This Fund Matters

Southeast Alberta is home to outstanding recreation organizations, dedicated volunteers, and remarkable community events. Yet many barriers still prevent people from participating fully in sport and recreation.

Access & Affordability

Registration fees, transportation, equipment, and program costs remain barriers for many individuals and families.

Inclusion & Adaptive Recreation

More resources are needed to ensure individuals of all abilities can participate and thrive.

Women & Girls in Sport

Additional investment is needed to improve participation, retention, leadership, and development opportunities.

Community Sport Development

Local organizations need support to grow programs, train volunteers, and increase participation.

What Your Gift Will Support

As the fund grows, annual grants will support projects such as:

  • Adaptive recreation programs
  • Youth sport participation initiatives
  • Equipment and accessibility supports
  • Community recreation events
  • Volunteer and coach development
  • Rural recreation opportunities
  • Girls and women in sport initiatives
  • Programs that reduce barriers to participation

The Legacy Fund will support opportunities that foster inclusion, belonging, accessibility, and community connection for participants across Southeast Alberta.

“We’re all much more alike than we are different, and sport is a great common denominator.”
