Community Grants (formerly Smart & Caring Community Grants) support communities across Southeastern Alberta by enhancing belonging of all citizens and strengthening the nonprofit and voluntary sectors. Donors choose this fund as a way to allocate their contributions to support the community’s greatest needs. In awarding grants, we conduct a comprehensive procedure to determine the most crucial community needs from data and evidence-based practice. Grants are then awarded based on potential impact and fund availability.
Each year the Community Foundation hosts a Vital event to help determine the community’s greatest needs which guides our funding priorities. These priorities can change from year to year. The current priorities, in no particular order, are as follows:
Work & Economy
Food Security, Housing Stability, and Domestic Violence
Organizations who are registered with CRA as a qualified donee or apply in partnership with a qualified donee to be eligible. The Declaration of Affiliation can be found here.
Applications are filtered through a two-step process, with details and links below. Organizations are strongly advised to attend our grant workshops, which are held twice a year.
Spring Grant Cycle: March 15 at 4:30pm
Fall Grant Cycle: September 15 at 4:30pm
If the deadline falls on a weekend, the application must be submitted by the Monday following at 12 noon.
The applications are reviewed by a committee of volunteers who make grant recommendations to the Community Foundation’s Board of Directors. This takes approximately six to eight weeks and applicants will be informed of the result at that time.
