In 1999, Michael Anctil and his wife, Wanda, were approached with an idea that would spark a legacy of generosity and community support. A memorial project through their business, Medicine Hat Monumental, introduced them to the local Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA), and they quickly realized the organization’s potential to make a lasting impact. Encouraged by his parents, Yvonne and her late husband, Albert, who made their initial donation in 2000, Michael and Wanda took their first steps toward becoming deeply involved in the Foundation’s work.

Over time, Michael was invited to join CFSEA’s board. This role gave him firsthand insight into the transformative work the Foundation was doing, and he eventually served as Board Chair for five years. Inspired by his parents’ example and firsthand experience on the Board, Michael and Wanda started their own fund, committing to regular contributions every year. They appreciated that their donation is held in perpetuity, supporting generations to come with the interest earned.

Although Michael’s father has since passed away, Yvonne continues to honour their family’s commitment by contributing to the Foundation annually. Together, Michael, Wanda, and Yvonne are proud Heritage Club members, a designation for donors who plan to leave part of their estate to the foundation. This thoughtful decision ensures that their family’s legacy of giving will continue to address the community’s evolving needs long into the future.

Michael quoted his father’s wisdom, which has guided their philanthropic journey: “If you’re successful in the community, it’s an obligation to give back.” For the Anctil family, the Community Foundation has proven to be the ideal avenue for fulfilling that obligation. Not only does their support stay local, but it also provides a tangible way to give back to the community that has supported them throughout their lives.

Michael encourages others to explore the opportunities offered by the Community Foundation: “At least get the information. Once you hear what’s available, I’m confident you’ll be inspired to become a donor too.”

The Anctil family’s story is a testament to the enduring power of community, generosity, and thoughtful planning. Through their unwavering commitment, they’ve created a legacy that will benefit their community for generations to come.
