The Community Foundation proudly acknowledges the vital role older adults play in shaping our communities through the Top 7 Over 70 initiative. Rooted in our core pillars of We Grow, We Give, and We Inspire, this initiative highlights extraordinary achievements after the age of 70 and demonstrates that age is no barrier to innovation, creativity, or making a meaningful impact.

This celebration showcases the accomplishments of exceptional individuals, honours their positive legacy, and encourages community engagement. CFSEA is excited to host this inaugural event as it reinforces our values of leadership, innovation, integrity, and inclusion.

On September 5th, we gathered members of the community, media, sponsors, and nominees to announce the 2024 Top 7 Over 70 – Southeast Alberta Award Recipients.

Congratulations to the 7 Recipients!

Blair Reid (Cypress County): Blair Reid’s dedication to his community, particularly in sports, is epitomized by the new Dunmore Community Ranch Arena. His persistent efforts were instrumental in bringing this project to life, creating a space that honors the region’s agricultural heritage and will serve the community for generations.

Deborah Forbes (Medicine Hat): This year, Deborah Forbes earned her Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Westminster. Her latest artistic endeavor, “Sea Jellies: Next Generation,” blends scientific observation with artistic creativity and will be showcased at the Esplanade Gallery and the Monarch Theatre, with a national tour planned for 2026-2028. Deborah’s dedication to the arts, her ongoing career in education, and her extensive volunteer work in Medicine Hat make her a worthy recipient of this recognition.

Jake Eckert (Brooks): At the age of 88, Jake Eckert published a book chronicling his Mennonite family’s history of fleeing persecution, violence, and tyranny—a story that resonates with many newcomers to the community today, who often express gratitude for feeling safe here. Jake’s family is deeply rooted in the values passed down by his mother: kindness, helping neighbors, and supporting the community.

Martha Munz (Medicine Hat): Martha Munz launched the “Adopt a Pond” program in Medicine Hat and Redcliff, which has inspired over 75 volunteers to clean up ponds and other local water bodies. At over 80 years old, Martha’s unwavering commitment to environmental stewardship is celebrated by the Society of Grasslands Naturalists and The South East Watershed Alliance.

Nancy Hanson (Oyen): Nancy Hanson is a shining example of what the Top 7 Over 70 award represents. After a lifetime in agriculture, Nancy became a self-taught photographer and naturalist, capturing her deep connection to nature in her art. She has created and shared hundreds of postcards featuring her photographs and meaningful poetry with friends and strangers alike. At 72, Nancy began writing stories inspired by the Red Deer River area, evolving from short stories into books. Her latest project involves recording her stories in her own voice, learning new technologies to bring her work to life.

Bill Yuill (Medicine Hat): Bill Yuill is a distinguished philanthropist in Medicine Hat and Southeastern Alberta, known for his substantial contributions to the community. One of his notable achievements is the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, which allows cancer patients to receive life-saving treatments close to home. Bill’s commitment to improving local healthcare exemplifies his enduring legacy of generosity.

Wilma Hunter (Brooks): Wilma Hunter, initially shy about speaking in public, left a lasting impression when she spoke at the Brooks Rotary Club about the “Dress a Girl” program, which aims to reduce child abduction and human trafficking. Her passion for the cause has empowered her to lead teams of sewers and volunteers who source materials from thrift sales, making her a recognized advocate for Dress a Girl in Canada.
