The Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta (CFSEA) is proud to announce the launch of the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games Legacy Fund, a permanent endowment established to transform the impact of the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games into a lasting benefit for communities throughout Southeast Alberta.

The fund has been created to ensure that the values celebrated during the Games, including inclusion, participation, achievement, belonging, and community spirit, continue to strengthen communities for generations to come. Through long-term investment and annual granting, the Legacy Fund will support sport and recreation initiatives that improve access, reduce participation barriers, and create opportunities for people of all ages and abilities across Southeast Alberta.

“The Special Olympics Canada Summer Games will inspire our region in countless ways, but we have an opportunity to create something that lasts long after the closing ceremonies. This fund allows individuals, businesses, organizations, and community leaders to invest in a permanent legacy that will support participation, inclusion, and healthy communities across Southeast Alberta for decades to come.”

– Niki Gray, Executive Director.

As a permanent endowment, gifts to the Legacy Fund are invested and protected, generating annual grants that will support initiatives such as:

  • Sport and recreation participation programs
  • Inclusive and adaptive recreation opportunities
  • Volunteer and coach development
  • Women and girls in sport initiatives
  • Community sporting events and tournaments
  • Registration and equipment assistance
  • Transportation support
  • Projects that strengthen community connection and well-being

The Community Foundation has set a goal of building the fund to $500,000 by the end of 2028, with an important milestone of reaching $250,000 in endowed assets, which will establish a dedicated Sport and Recreation Grant Stream serving communities throughout Southeast Alberta.

Upon reaching this milestone, local organizations will be able to apply for grants that expand participation, improve accessibility, develop new programs, and support the hosting of sporting events and competitions that align with the vision and objectives of the fund.

The Legacy Fund is designed to become a permanent charitable resource that grows over time through donations, corporate sponsorships, planned gifts, and community support. As the fund grows, so too will the annual grant funding available to support local projects and organizations.

CFSEA is now inviting contributions from individuals, families, businesses, service clubs, and community organizations who wish to help establish this lasting legacy.

“Every gift matters. Whether someone contributes $50, $500, or $50,000, they are helping create opportunities for future generations to participate in sport and recreation, experience belonging, and build healthier, more connected communities.”

– Niki Gray, Executive Director.
