Over the years, the Community Foundation has gained the support from many individuals who desire to leave a gift that lasts forever. Some choose to donate throughout their life, while others include the Community Foundation in their future plans – the Kurpjuweit’s did both. Lavern Kurpjuweit was born on May 14, 1921, and passed away on April 13, 2016, at the age of 94. His wife, Marianne (Mary) Kurpjuweit was born on July 27, 1922, and passed away on October 16, 2009, at the age of 87. Lavern and Mary met and were married on November 23, 1950 in Medicine Hat.

The Kurpjuweits were fortunate to have a good start in life with developed farmland given to them by Lavern’s father. They farmed with their three children until 1957 when they purchased their own land near Seven Persons so their children could be closer to school.

Lavern and Mary were dedicated and hard-working individuals who built their new home from the ground up, breaking the land, picking the rocks, and leveling the land for irrigation. They established a beautiful farm where they raised their family. They believed they were “stewards of the land” and lived by that saying.

In 1996, Lavern and Mary moved to Medicine Hat and continued to ranch and farm a smaller section of land with their son. They named this land Red Rock Ranch, operating it from 2002 until 2008.

In their 59 years together, Lavern and Mary lived an abundant life, full of challenges and accomplishments. Lavern raised several head of Hereford steers and became a large exporter of hay which he won various awards for. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing ball. Mary was gifted in many things as well, having worked at the Leader Hospital, the Glass Factory in Redcliff, and on the farm. She enjoyed contributing to her family, crocheting, cooking, and baking.

Lavern and Mary always made it a priority to give their family the very best. They were also proud supporters of the organizations they held dear, specifically the churches they attended.

Lavern and Mary established three funds with the Community Foundation of Southeastern Alberta. Firstly, a Designated Fund that distributes yearly to Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church, Holy Family Roman Catholic Parish, Medicine Hat and District Health Foundation, and Whispering Pines Fellowship Camp, second, a Smart and Caring Community Fund which distributes to the community’s greatest needs, finally, a Youth in Philanthropy Fund to teach the next generation about giving.

The Kurpjuweits have ensured that their legacy will remain, and their gift will continue supporting the community today, tomorrow, and forever! Both Lavern and Mary believed in the vision of the Community Foundation and in the power of leaving a lasting legacy. Their gift will forever be remembered. Thank you, Lavern and Mary, Heritage Club Members, and respected friends of the Foundation!
