Family’s Generosity Shapes the Future of Medicine Hat

A family’s commitment to community philanthropy is leaving a lasting legacy in Medicine Hat. Through a blend of endowments, passion, and generational involvement, the Curtin family is ensuring that their city thrives for years to come.

Kimberley Knight, a retired business owner and active community volunteer, shared how her family’s journey into philanthropy began. “I was fortunate enough to get a position with the Community Foundation, and once I was there, I learned about how funds and endowments work. My family was already starting to support the community, and once we learned we could set up some funds for them to grow in perpetuity, it just seemed like a really smart and easy way to look after many areas in Medicine Hat,” Kimberley said.

This family tradition of giving traces back to Marilyn Curtin and her late husband, Austin. Marilyn, a retired nurse, established the first of many family funds after Austin’s passing as a way to honour his vision of giving back. The Curtin Family Fund began by allocating a portion of Austin’s estate to charitable causes.

“It’s the easiest way to give because they look after everything,” Marilyn said. “All we have to do is supply the money, and it grows, and then there’s more to give.”

Supporting Causes Close to the Heart

Over the years, the family has established ten funds, distributing $116,930 to a variety of local charities. Each fund reflects personal and meaningful connections to the community.

Marilyn’s first fund supported HALO Air Ambulance, a cause she was drawn to due to her frequent visits to her cabin in Elkwater. “Knowing that HALO would be there in case of a medical emergency was a comfort,” she explained.

Her commitment to fostering safety and growth extended to the Women’s Shelter, a cause she is deeply passionate about, aiming to see women in the community thrive. The family’s beloved 14-year-old cat inspired the creation of an SPCA fund in its memory. Each of Marilyn’s fund were created out of passion and care for a cause.

Philanthropy as a Family Tradition

The Community Foundation has played a pivotal role in guiding their efforts. “It’s a great organization,” Kimberley noted. “They help put you in different directions based on your interests. Each year, your family can get together, discuss causes, and involve all generations, making it easy and meaningful.”

Today, the Curtin family continue to inspire others in Medicine Hat, proving that small, thoughtful actions can lead to enduring change. With a legacy rooted in compassion and dedication, they’re not just supporting their community — they’re strengthening it for generations to come.
