Stephen and Glenda Hawthorne

Stephen Hawthorne was born and raised in Medicine Hat. He was married to Glenda, the love of his life and best friend. Glenda moved from a farm in Saskatchewan to Medicine Hat to attend college, which is when she met Stephen. In 1984, they were married and spent a wonderful 29 years together, before he passed away in September of 2014.

Growing up, Stephen was involved in a number of sports and became a passionate and avid golfer. Golfing was something Glenda and Stephen enjoyed doing together, they even travelled to several destinations to golf and attend PGA tournaments. They had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand, Thailand, Hawaii, Bermuda, and many places in the United States. They attended the British Open and the 2013 Masters in Augusta, despite Stephen’s ongoing fight with cancer at that time.

Glenda attended the Medicine Hat College to become a nurse and has had the privilege of working in health care her entire working career. She is a Registered Nurse who passionately cares for patients and loves what she does. Currently, you will find her caring for people in the Medicine Hat Hospital as the Vascular/Stroke Navigator. In her free time, she plays pickleball and continues to enjoy the sport of golf. Glenda loves travelling and has visited many parts of the world!

Stephen was a dedicated employee with Good Year for 36 years. He was also a member of the YMCA and Riverview Golf Club for many years. Stephen lived life to the fullest and enjoyed taking pride in his home, yard, and vehicles. He always put others before himself, loved kids, and was a kid at heart. His family and friends were extremely important to him, and they knew Stephen for his hospitality, kindness, and honesty. Stephen had a strong faith in God and enjoyed volunteering at his Church. His positive attitude during his battle with cancer was an inspiration to many.

“He had an infectious smile and was always positive even when he was fighting cancer and having to endure surgeries and treatments. He loved me dearly and was my best friend.” – Glenda.

In the summer of 2018, Glenda contacted the Community Foundation to inquire about leaving a lasting legacy for Stephen. Stephen grew up in Medicine Hat and loved his community, so Glenda decided to establish a designated fund to support youth and sports in Medicine Hat and Southeast Alberta known as The Stephen Hawthorne Memorial Fund.

“I love the idea that the Foundation provides an ongoing legacy, in the gift that keeps on giving. Stephen would be honoured to have a legacy in honour of him that supports the community he grew up in, lived his life in, and loved.” – Glenda

In 2021, Glenda became a CFSEA Board Member as a way to continue to invest in the community she loves. She also volunteers on the CFSEA Grants Committee and Finance Committee. We are grateful for Glenda’s vision to honor Stephen’s legacy through the establishment of an endowment fund – a gift that lasts forever. Thank you, Glenda, for giving of your time, talent, and treasure to the Community Foundation!
